Welcome to Maryland's very first sheep-milking dairy farm! Sheep have been raised for milk for thousands of years and were milked before cows. The world's commercial dairy sheep industry is concentrated in Europe and the countries on or near the Mediterranean Sea.

The dairy sheep industry is in its infancy in the United States. There are approximately 100 dairy sheep farms in the U.S. They are found mostly in New England, the Upper Midwest, New York, California - and now in the mid Atlantic.

Shepherds Manor Creamery produces artisan sheep cheese and other products. Located in the beautiful countryside of Carroll County, Maryland, we are less than an hour from the Baltimore/Washington DC metro area. We are also very close to the vineyards and wineries of Carroll and Frederick counties.

Cheese is lactose issue friendly! Easier to digest than cows milk cheese, is rich in protein and high in nutrients.

Colleen and Michael Histon grew up in the suburbs of Silver Spring, Maryland and moved to Mount Airy 21 years ago. Colleen is a financial administrator for a construction company. She has a small commercial embroidery business, dabbles in catering, and as a hobby entertains friends with wine pairing course dinner parties. Michael works with an engineering firm.

They raised two children Anne Marie and Matthew, who spent several years in the Carroll County 4-H program. They raised market lambs, breeding sheep, market steers, and market pigs to show at the county fairs. In 2006 research began to find a sustainable agricultural business that would satisfy their joy of animal husbandry as well as Colleen's interest in food.

They traveled to several sheep dairy farms and decided to embark on raising dairy sheep and producing farmstead sheep's milk cheese. Lambs were purchased in Virginia and Wisconsin. They found a suitable farm to purchase in New Windsor and sold the Mount Airy house. With much help from friends, family, and neighbors, they moved in to the farm in January 2010.
